The SendSafely Chrome extension is available for free from the Chrome Web Store.
After installing the extension, you will see a SendSafely Button (orange padlock) in the top right corner of the screen. The Chrome Extension provides two methods to use SendSafely from Chrome.
Method 1: Chrome Extension Popup Window
The popup window is accessible at any time from Chrome by pressing the SendSafely icon button on the righthand side of the address bar. This button should be visible at all times once the extension is installed. The screenshot below shows what the icon looks like.
When the extension is first installed, you will need to launch the pop-up window to configure an API key for the extension to use. The API Key can be configured from the "Configure Settings" tab of the popup window. Once configured, you can use the "Send Items" tab to create new SendSafely packages, which includes support for messages and files.
Method 2: Gmail Integration
The Chrome Extension also supports integration directly into the Gmail web UI in much the same way as the SendSafely Outlook Plug-in. Gmail integration must be explicitly enabled by toggling the on/off switch on the "Configure Settings" tab of the popup window, as shown below.
Once enabled, you will see a SendSafely icon button in the toolbar when composing or replying to an email message in Gmail. Note that the button will only appear when you are logged into Gmail with the same account associated with the API key used by the chrome extension.
The SendSafely Gmail button (next to the classic "Attach File" button) works in much the same way as the classic "Attach File" button, however files will be encrypted and uploaded via SendSafely instead of attached to the email message. You will know that the file was attached with SendSafely if you see the SendSafely icon on the attachment icon (see below). The extension will also add a placeholder region to the top of the message where the link to access the package will ultimately be inserted (after pressing send). This region is also highlighted in red below.
After you press "Send", you will be prompted to add SMS verification for each recipient. The email will not be sent until you press the "Continue" button.
